Fleas

Fleas are an extremely common problem in cats and dogs.

They can cause much irritation and distress, allergic dermatitis, transmission of tapeworms and even anaemia in severely affected animals. Adult fleas are prolific egg-layers and with optimal environmental conditions, an infestation can develop rapidly, peaking in summer through to early autumn.

The key to effective flea control lies in understanding the flea’s lifecycle and tackling the 3 target aspects.

1) Killing fleas on the pet

The most effective flea adulticides are prescription-only “spot-ons” or sprays, e.g. Frontline or the advanced formulation Frontline combo.

2) Preventing flea eggs from hatching

Program is available in a monthly oral formulation, or as a convenient 6-monthly injection for cats. Frontline combo contains an ingredient that also prevents flea eggs from hatching.

3) Treating the environment

Quality household environmental sprays, such as Indorex are highly effective at killing larvae, pupae and adult fleas. It is important to spray skirting boards, the pets bedding area and generally wherever the pet has access to.

For effective flea control in multi-pet households, it is vital to treat all pets, even if some are not showing obvious signs of harbouring fleas.

Home Visit Vet can tailor a specific flea treatment and prevention programme that specifically addresses your pet’s circumstances and environmental contamination.
